During
the next month, the Monterey County Board of Supervisors will be holding
several "workshop" sessions on the latest draft of the proposed
General Plan Update. Supposedly, these workshop sessions are simply
to verify that the latest draft of the GPU conforms to what the Board
directed last November. In fact, landowner and developer representatives
are asking the Board to weaken the current draft GPU even more than
the Board has already weakened it, by the actions that the Board took
in November 2002.
"Final"
action on the General Plan Update will occur either late this year
(unlikely) or (more likely) in the early Spring of next year (AFTER
the next Supervisorial elections in March 2004). The upcoming workshop
sessions are preparatory to the formal consideration of the "second
draft" GPU. As usual, the more public participation the better.
The most important Workshops are scheduled for the evening of Tuesday,
May 27th, and the evening of Tuesday, June 24th.
Please
contact LandWatch for more information, and let us know whether
you'd like help preparing a letter to the Board, or "talking
points" for one of the workshop sessions.
