LandWatch Memo on GPU Comments

Memo

To: LandWatch Members and Supporters

From: LandWatch Executive Director Gary Patton

Date: June 20, 2002

RE: What You Can Do Now To Help Achieve A Good County General PlanThis memorandum is to ask for your help—and for a rapid response.

The future of Monterey County depends on our ability, as a community, to do good planning for the future. In July, the Board of Supervisors will be making some key decisions on a proposed General Plan Update (GPU). We need your help to convince the Board that Monterey County needs to change its "business as usual" approach to growth and development.

Attached is a letter just submitted to the Monterey County Planning Commission, that states our position on the proposed GPU. We hope you’ll agree with the points we make!

If you do agree with the League of Women Voters of the Monterey Peninsula, the Carmel Valley Association, the Sierra Club, Friends, Artists and Neighbors of Elkhorn Slough, National Audubon-California, the North County Citizens Oversight Coalition, the Monterey Bay Chapter of the California Native Plant Society, and LandWatch, please help convince our public officials to make the right decisions.

It is absolutely vital that you let the Board of Supervisors know your views on the proposed General Plan Update before they vote on the GPU in July.

Please take one (or both) of the following actions:

  1. Write a letter to the Board of Supervisors, stating your position. Addresses are attached. You can use our joint letter as a model.

  2. Write a letter to local newspapers, stating your position. Again, addresses are attached. While you can use our joint letter as a model, Letters to the Editor must be very brief (200-250 words).

Thanks for your help! Working together, we can protect and preserve the unique treasures of the Monterey Bay Area for our children, and their children, and can ensure a strong economy, a healthy environment, and a just and equitable society.
