Urge Supervisors to Designate Site as Permanent Open Space and Recreation

Due to the hard work of LandWatch and our friends from Fort Ord Rec Users, Friends of the Fort Ord Warhorse, and Keep Fort Ord Wild, the Board of Supervisors voted to reverse its decision on the Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) / Whispering Oaks project in February. More than 3,400 oak trees and a historic trail system would have been lost if the project was not stopped by a successful referendum and lawsuit.

Now there is a real opportunity to keep the Whispering Oaks site open space. Your voice is needed to make this a “fairytale” ending to this “once upon a time” story.

At the June 26th meeting, the Supervisors will decide if they want to pursue re-designating the Whispering Oaks site as permanent open space and recreation. LandWatch Monterey County urges you to attend the hearing this Tuesday at 1:30pm and urge the Board of Supervisors to direct staff to re-designate the Whispering Oaks site as open space and recreation. If you cannot attend, please email or call the Supervisors! This decision will benefit all Monterey County residents, improve our quality of life, provide important natural resource protection, and improve our water quality.

Please send the Supervisors a group email (links to all email addresses) or phone/email them individually:

Jane Parker 831-755-5044 district4@co.monterey.ca.us

Dave Potter 831-755-5055 district5@co.monterey.ca.us

Talking Points:

  • Provide your name and city of residence

  • Thank the Supervisors for listening to their constituents and for rejecting the MST / Whispering Oaks project in February

  • Encourage the Supervisors to designate Whispering Oaks as permanent open space
