This Tuesday, July 12th, the Board of Supervisors will decide on two major projects in Monterey County
Blurb for homepage: July 12th is an important day for Monterey County! Two major projects will be decided by the Board of Supervisors: the MST / Whispering Oaks project in Fort Ord and the Corral de Tierra Shopping Center with a new 100,000 square foot proposal.
MST / Whispering Oaks
This Tuesday the Board of Supervisors will finalize their vote approving the removal of 4,400 oak trees for a business park and bus maintenance facility in the former Fort Ord. LandWatch opposes this project because alternative sites exist for the Monterey Salinas Transit facility: MST already owns a blighted site, ripe for redevelopment, down the street at 7th and Gigling; and the city of Marina wants MST to locate at the Marina Airport which is already zoned for industrial uses. Despite this the Board of Supervisors voted their intent to approve this project on June 14th for the site proposed which is covered with mature oak trees and trails! Even though the Board closed the public hearing, we invite you to attend and pressure the Board to change their vote!

Corral de Tierra Shopping Center
Also on Tuesday the Board of Supervisors will consider yet another proposal by the developers of the Corral de Tierra Shopping Center. Last month the developer proposed a 116,000 square foot center and the Supervisors said it was too big. Now the developers are proposing a still-huge 100,000 square foot center. Compare the images below and see how little the proposal has really changed.
