MST/Whispering Oaks To Be Open Space? |
||||||||
In February 2012, the Board of Supervisors reversed its decision on the Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST)/Whispering Oaks project. The project would have destroyed more than 3,400 oak trees and a historic trail system obliterated if the project had not been stopped by a successful referendum and lawsuit. Both of which were organized by local groups including LandWatch, Fort Ord Rec Users, Friends of the Fort Ord Warhorse and Keep Fort Ord Wild. The Board of Supervisors, at its June 26th meeting, voted unanimously to direct staff to begin the work necessary to re-designate the MST/Whispering Oaks site as permanent open space. If approved, this decision will benefit all Monterey County residents by providing important natural resource protection and maintaining an important and historic trail system. LandWatch worked with our members to urge the Supervisors to re-designate the site as open space. Thank you to all the supporters that phoned, emailed, or personally lobbied our Supervisors to support this re-designation. This matter is not over yet and LandWatch will keep members posted as any news occurs on this topic. [Return to Fort Ord Issues and Actions] posted 07.12.12 |
