BUILDING RANCHO SAN JUAN WILL COST YOU!  WHAT WILL YOU DO ABOUT IT?

Rancho San Juan (or what some folks are calling Rancho San Wrong) is a city-scale development a quarter the size of the city of Salinas—2500 acres total, and a massive conversion of valuable farmland and open space.

RANCHO SAN JUAN WILL DRAIN OUR COUNTY’S ECONOMY AND CAUSE TAXPAYERS TO SUBSIDIZE DEVELOPER PROFITS!

Annual Loss of Farmland Impact to the County Economy

$33 Million Lost Annually through the Conversion of Prime Farmland at Rancho San Juan. Our local economy cannot sustain this kind of decision making!

COSTS TO THE PUBLIC:

  • $1,424,000 to $1,864,000 annual financial deficit to the county’s budget.  That’s enough to pay the salaries of 24 to 31 Police Officers, or 25 staff nurses at Natividad Medical Center.
  • Monterey County Taxpayers will pay $142 million just for the construction of Backbone Infrastructure—streets, storm water drainage and grading. $142 Million is about 25% of the budget for the entire county.
  • Loss of over 1,532 acres of Valuable Farmland, the economic engine that drives the Monterey County economy.

WHAT COULD BE DONE INSTEAD OF RANCHO SAN JUAN

The County could guide growth towards already existing urban areas instead of converting valuable farmland and open space.  Guiding growth towards existing urban areas would reduce infrastructure costs (often paid by taxpayers) by 30% , and improve fiscal impacts to the county budget by 30-50%
