The KUSP Land Use
Report #2: "The General Plan" |
||||||||
The General Plan is like the "Constitution." In terms of the policies that guide and govern how we use the land, nothing is more important. All the zoning designations that determine exact land uses, and all the project decisions that say "yes" or "no" to a particular development, have to be consistent with the communitys General Plan. Citizens and residents who want to have an impact on the future of land use in their community need to pay attention to that General Plan. If youd like to "leverage" your participation in land use decision-making, dont wait for the developers to propose specific projects. Help set the standards in your community that every development will have to meet. Get involved with that General Plan. Its a good time to be thinking about getting involved. The City of Monterey, the City of Marina, the City of Sand City, Monterey County, and the City of Salinas are all right in the middle of General Plan revisions and updates. In Salinas, draft General Plan policies propose annexing and developing up to 4,400 acres of land not now in the city--mostly agricultural land. The future of our economy, social equity, and the health of our environment depend on the land use choices we make. Contact the Board of Supervisors or your City Council to find out how you can get involved.
