The KUSP Land Use Report #14: Issues On The Coast

The following Land Use Report is presented by Gary Patton, Executive Director of LandWatch Monterey County. The opinions expressed by Mr. Patton are not necessarily those of KUSP Radio, nor of any of our sponsors.

Here are some brief reports from along the coast.

In Santa Cruz County, debate about widening Highway One has moved to a new level. The Transportation Commission has voted to widen the road. The question now presented is, "how can we pay for it?" Any serious effort to go forward will require the people of Santa Cruz County to open up their pocketbooks—so stay tuned for a sales tax election sometime soon!

In the Pajaro Valley, a community-based effort to develop a land use plan for areas in and around Watsonville seems to be heading towards possible success—and here’s a genuine surprise: an "Urban Growth Boundary" for the City of Watsonville may be part of the equation! We should stay tuned for that, too!

And let’s not forget San Luis Obispo County. The City of San Luis Obispo would like to get access to water in the Salinas River—which flows North into Monterey County. San Luis Obispo’s gain would be Monterey County’s loss—so a potential struggle for water should be on our radar screens. Speaking of water, an extremely informative workshop on water policy will take place on Saturday November 3rd, from 9:00am to 12:30pm at the Watsonville Women’s Center. Call Action Pajaro Valley for details—they’re in the phone book.

For KUSP, this is Gary Patton.
