The KUSP Land Use Report #31: Opportunities For The Public On The Monterey County General Plan

Gary Patton, Executive Director of LandWatch Monterey County, presents the following Land Use Report. The opinions expressed by Mr. Patton are not necessarily those of KUSP Radio, nor of any of our sponsors.

Monterey County residents have a real opportunity to help determine their future. The County General Plan will be revised this year, and citizens and residents will have an excellent chance to make their views known.

A local community has broad latitude to establish the policies that will govern its future growth. If the policies adopted are clear, and unambiguous—not vague—future developments really will have to follow the policies.

Monterey County, for instance, could have a General Plan policy that says that commercially productive agricultural land will be reserved for agricultural use—so it can’t be turned into an auto mall, an aircraft museum, or a subdivision. It could have a policy that says that all new development must demonstrate a long-term, sustainable water supply.

If you have policies in mind you think should govern future growth and development, now is the time to be involved. A General Plan Open House will be held on Thursday, March 14th, from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m., at the Steinbeck Center in Salinas. Another one is scheduled for Tuesday, March 19th, from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m., at the CSUMB University Center.

The chance to adopt a General Plan comes about every twenty years. Don’t miss this chance.

For KUSP, this is Gary Patton.
