Job Description: Economic Development Advocate

Reports to: Executive Director

Salary Range: Depends on Experience

Type of Position: Full Time Exempt

Responsibilities:
The Economic Development Advocate is responsible for promoting the economic health of Monterey County through the implementation of sound land-use policy and legislation. She/he will carry out this assignment by forming and supporting strategic alliances with the business community and regulatory agencies.

The Economic Development Advocate will assist the Executive Director in developing overall strategies and programs to achieve the economic and policy goals of LandWatch Monterey County, and will be responsible for the implementation of programs and activities, to include:

  • Forging strategic partnerships with the business community, government agencies, and other nonprofits in support of sound and responsible land use policies

  • Identifying appropriate land-use policies, zoning and regulations that will stimulate and promote economic vitality

  • Assisting projects located within urban growth boundaries and consistent with sound land use policies

  • Building the necessary public consensus to move policies and projects forward

  • Ensuring the currency of programmatic material on the LandWatch website

  • Producing position statements, public relations and media outreach materials

  • Encouraging public and private investment for projects related to sound land-use policy and economic development

  • Cultivating major donor prospects for LandWatch

The Economic Development Advocate will interact and communicate with the business community, LandWatch members, and with the general public, the media, governmental agencies and representatives of groups interested in land-use, and will make public presentations as required.

Marketing activities assigned to the Economic Development Advocate will position LandWatch as an agent of positive change in the business community and lead to the perception among policymakers and the general public that LandWatch is working for the improvement of the County’s economic well-being.

Fundraising activities assigned to the Economic Development Advocate include managing and cultivating a small group of major donor prospects, and pursuing opportunities for corporate sponsorship. The fundraising responsibilities of the Economic Development Advocate will be overseen by the Deputy Director.

Desirable qualifications for the Economic Development Advocate position include:

  • At least five years professional experience in business development/marketing, preferably in agricultural and/or hospitality oriented industries.

  • Familiarity with a range of policy issues including transportation, housing, community development, air quality, water quality, water policy, natural resources, and land conservation.

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with other organizations and agencies to identify and implement policies.

  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to make public presentations to large and small groups, and to write materials used in fundraising proposals, outreach, public relations, and board reports as necessary.

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills including the ability to interact successfully with business leaders, local officials, community leaders, board members, committees, staff, volunteers and the public, to organize and facilitate meetings and events, and to conduct negotiations, find common ground and develop consensus among disparate interests.

  • Poised and self-confident with the ability to interact comfortably in a variety of social and business settings.

  • Ability effectively to resolve conflicts.

  • A bachelor’s degree.

  • Experience working with unions.

  • Fluency in both Spanish and English, and a strong familiarity with the Latin American community.

  • Experience in corporate fundraising for nonprofits.
